Acting on a petition filed by Schagrin Associates on behalf of U.S. cherry producers, the U.S. Department of Commerce on May 13 initiated an investigation into whether imports of cherries from Turkey are illegally dumped and subsidized.

International trade rules under the WTO Agreements--to which Turkey has agreed--allow for the imposition of tariffs to offset unfair trade practices.

This case is important to the U.S. producers who are harmed by the impact of unfair imports on the U.S. market. Illegally dumped and subsidized imports skew market prices and prevent fair competition.
